Articulate and Clear

Someone who speaks clearly is also (most likely) speaking articulately.

On the other hand, I think we’ve heard plenty of articulate speakers who aren’t clear speakers.

Articulate speakers can get seduced into thinking the more articulate speaking the better. ‘I sound so good I must keep going for all of our sakes’.

Being clear takes more guts.

Nightcap 28

Did the fist pair of sneakers come with instructions for loop swoop and pull…or did they toss the laces in knowing people would figure something out?

No need for ‘at owners expense’ on the tow away sign. We know.

No one looks cool looking down at their phone. You are not the exception.

Why do we only use the term spry for old people?

Every child’s first lie is ‘yes I brushed my teeth’.

I understand that sliding down the fire pole is faster than the firemen having to take the stairs…but why don’t they just build the fireman hang out room on the same floor as the truck?

Uniformity and Juxtaposition

Happy singer with happy songs: Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Wonder, Keith Urban

Happy singer with sad songs: Adele, John Legend, (early) Coldplay

Sad singer with happy songs: Fountains of Wayne, Jellyfish, lots of power pop

Sad singer with sad songs: Kacey Musgraves, Pete Yorn, James Taylor

Uniformity and juxtaposition are powerful tools in music.

Complaining and Quitting

If quitting is not an option that is currently on the table…then simply do your five minutes of complaining and go back to work.

However, if you find yourself doing five minutes of work and then going back to complaining…it might be time to quit.

How Was The Show?

It depends on what you’re measuring.

Are you measuring the amount of fun you had, the audience had, how big the audience was, how few wrong notes you played, how many people bought merch, what gross ticket sales were, how many autographs you signed, how many people bought the VIP package?

Artists get asked this question all the time but maybe the more interesting question is…

How will you know if the show was good?

Rent Me.

That’s what it says on the side of all the construction dumpsters around town.

But here’s what we know…

-If you call the number and rent a dumpster, you’re not going to get that actual dumpster.

-You don’t care that you’re not getting that actual dumpster.

-What ‘Rent Me’ really means is you’ll get something that resembles and functions like the one you see here…and we all agree that that’s the point.

So if you’re in the dumpster business it pays to be generic and have plenty of supply.

On the other hand, if you’re an artist…
