Another Thing About The Top

The top, the big goal, the crowning moment, the end all be all.

You need people helping you in order to achieve the career you want.

But if you don’t care about them, if you don’t care for them, if all you do is need them to aid you…you will eventually be sniffed out.

And it’s not that you can’t still be successful and achieve the career you want…but if you do, you will be lonely.

Lonely At The Top

As the saying goes ‘it’s lonely at the top’.

The real reason it’s lonely at the top is because most people are relying on the top to make them un-lonely. And the top doesn’t do that. That’s not what the top is for.

So when you’re relying on something so heavily to make you un-lonely and it doesn’t, the pendulum swings hard back the other way.

(It’s why VH1 Behind The Music was so entertaining)

Crap Single

If you’re writing and releasing a crap single, you pray extra hard for steams and likes and shares to combat your internal embarrassment.

Streams and likes and shares of the song you know is crap allows you to falsely validate yourself “hey I make music for the fans”

But deep down you know the truth.

And deep down is what you’re left with at night when you go to bed.

***Write enough to get to the good stuff. Release enough to release the good stuff.

Temporary Elevators

Lots of big building construction in Nashville right now.

On the sides each building are temporary elevators for all the construction workers and supplies.

But an elevator is a tremendous amount of work to build and install. Just think, the workers build an entire elevator so they can build the thing they really want to build.

The temporary elevator isn’t the point of the building. It was built out of necessity, and if everything goes according to plan, it will go away.

A temporary elevator is a tactical element as a part of a strategy for achieving the goal.

Tactics and strategy change and evolve on your path toward the goal.

Let them change. Build the elevator when you need to. Tear it down when you need to.

Punching The Clock

Punching a time clock in and out of work fools you into thinking that the only path to more money is to make the display have higher numbers on it.

‘This machine tells me how much money I get, so I need to make the machine tell me a bigger number and the way that happens is if I’m in this place longer.’

The time clock narrows your vision and strong arms you into focusing on how long you can perform a function rather than the potency of your expertise, care, power, transformation and creativity.

So whether you punch a time clock or not, ditch the punch clock.
