Changing What You Want

When it isn’t going the way you want it to, it might be worth changing what you want.

If the skater kids keep not showing up to your shows like you want them to, it might be better to start wanting the preppy college kids who do in fact come out to your shows to keep coming out to your shows.

Or as Sheryl Crow put it…

“It’s not having what you want…It’s wanting what you’ve got”

A Producer In Omaha

The up and coming producer in Omaha easily (and relatively cheaply) has the same studio setup as the up and coming producer in Nashville.

So why are there more better producers in Nashville?

Because there’s more of them in Nashville. So they all talk to each other.

And being around like minded people speeds up the journey down the road. Iron sharpening iron. Drip drip drip, a little bit better. Did you try that plug in? Did you get the software update? Did you hear the new drum sample?

It turns out the type of people who you surround yourself with still make a significant difference.

Opportunity Conversations

There’s the person telling you about all the opportunities in the world.

And there’s the person offering you an opportunity.

These are two different people.

Lots of people like being a part of the fist one and you can find thousands of hours of YouTube videos talking about the first one.

But the second one is very different and can’t be found on YouTube.

Digging

Most of the people we look up to do two things very well…

Dig in the wilderness alone

Dig in front of people

Oh, then the third is to discern when each is called for.

Looking Good

When you do good work it makes other people look good.

It’s easy to forget that there are people leaning on you who really want you to do your job well.

You really want the booking agent to sign you. It’s easy to stop there and dwell on that.

The truth is the booking agent needs you to be good at putting on a magnificent show, so when she books your band, you look good…and thereby she looks good.

It’s worth it to stop and ask: When I do a great job at the thing I do, who else looks like a hero?

And if there’s even one person on that list, it’s an honor to be able to do that for them.
