After Show Diner Party

There’s an energy after you’ve put on the show. You just did it. Something special just happened. It’s in the air. It’s in the green room.

So you take that energy, along with your bandmates, maybe some friends and significant others down the street to a late night diner.

This is the best.

There’s already a magical buzz from the show and now you’re adding delicious indulgent late night breakfast food to the mix.

The connection, the stories, the laughs, the random things…you’re tired but you don’t wanna go to bed because it’s just too good.

Life on the road is a lot of different things…this is one of the best parts.

Bowling Scores

Someone walks into a bowling alley having never bowled before and doesn’t know any of the rules other than you need to throw the ball and hit the pins.

On their first game ever they somehow bowl a 205.

They say, “wow that was good, I’m gonna try and double it one day.”

That bowler has an amazing amount of talent to show up and score that big on the first try. The problem is they don’t know the rules of the game they are good at.

The boundaries and limitations are what make the game the game. Sure you can choose a different game, but if you’re going to play this one these are the rules.

***My best bowling score is a 192

Well Now I Have To Do It

We all need people in our lives where when we tell them the big new idea, we can’t help but add ‘Well now I have to do it’ to the end of our rant.

That relational accountability. The kind that says: yeah I’ll listen to your idea but only if you’re going to do something about it after.

Those are powerful, rare, precious relationships.

Do Some Pushing

If you’re doing it right, sometimes it should be hard. (Sometimes hard masks as boring)

The writing, the performing, the showing up, the serving, the coming through.

The difficulty is a sign you’re on the right path, not the wrong one.

Don’t run away the first time you feel something pushing back. Lean in and do some pushing yourself.

Master/Pub/Writer

Three of the four primary pillars of music as a business are…

The Master side

The Publishing side

The Writers side

The more you know about these the more the business begins to come into focus.

Who owns what, who reps what, and for how long and how big of a percentage…and all the laws, language and norms that go along with it.

If you’d like a place to start, check out The Plain and Simple Guide to Music Publishing.

When I was eighteen years old I remember older Nashvillians telling me even though it’s confusing, pay attention to this copyright stuff. That was good advice.

***The fourth pillar is live music.

From 10 to 100

You’re already really busy.

But you want more, more something.

So you push really hard and instead of getting 10 things done you get 11.

You eeked out one more.

Now you’re totally and completely maxed. But you know how to get 11 things done and that’s more than before. So maybe if you just try a little harder, put in a little more time that you don’t have, sacrifice more of your life that you’ve already given away….

With the flow you’ve created and are accustomed to you will never get you to 50 or 100 or whatever the big crazy number is.

You’re going to have to do something totally different to go from 11 to 100. Effort won’t do it. Increasing work hours won’t do it. Sacrificing more won’t do it.

It’s easy to go from 10 to 11 because you just do all the same things only a little faster.

What about a big shift, a big change, an idea that makes you scared but is the only way to get to 100?
