Finding The Teacher

A good way to get them to teach is to ask them to teach.

Another way is to show up where they are teaching.

In the music business there aren’t a whole lot of people going around doing formal teaching so you’re going to have to go with the first option.

Of course you have questions. Of course you have an idea of who might have the answers.

The problem is it’s really hard to start a sentence “Will you teach me…” Because it means they are the teacher, you are the student. They know, you don’t. They have the upper hand and you need a hand.

You’re happy to admit this in your head, but afraid to admit it out loud by asking the question.

A Word On Ideas

Ideas come to you.

You breathe life into them, take action on their behalf, grow them.

And then after a while they’re stable and have a power all their own.

A power that will breathe life back into you when facing obstacles and opposition. A power that will coax you to take further action. And a power to sweep away the hurdles.

We bring them to life and then they bring us to life.

After Show Diner Party

There’s an energy after you’ve put on the show. You just did it. Something special just happened. It’s in the air. It’s in the green room.

So you take that energy, along with your bandmates, maybe some friends and significant others down the street to a late night diner.

This is the best.

There’s already a magical buzz from the show and now you’re adding delicious indulgent late night breakfast food to the mix.

The connection, the stories, the laughs, the random things…you’re tired but you don’t wanna go to bed because it’s just too good.

Life on the road is a lot of different things…this is one of the best parts.

Bowling Scores

Someone walks into a bowling alley having never bowled before and doesn’t know any of the rules other than you need to throw the ball and hit the pins.

On their first game ever they somehow bowl a 205.

They say, “wow that was good, I’m gonna try and double it one day.”

That bowler has an amazing amount of talent to show up and score that big on the first try. The problem is they don’t know the rules of the game they are good at.

The boundaries and limitations are what make the game the game. Sure you can choose a different game, but if you’re going to play this one these are the rules.

***My best bowling score is a 192

Well Now I Have To Do It

We all need people in our lives where when we tell them the big new idea, we can’t help but add ‘Well now I have to do it’ to the end of our rant.

That relational accountability. The kind that says: yeah I’ll listen to your idea but only if you’re going to do something about it after.

Those are powerful, rare, precious relationships.

Do Some Pushing

If you’re doing it right, sometimes it should be hard. (Sometimes hard masks as boring)

The writing, the performing, the showing up, the serving, the coming through.

The difficulty is a sign you’re on the right path, not the wrong one.

Don’t run away the first time you feel something pushing back. Lean in and do some pushing yourself.
