Driving Range

I could see the golf course driving range out the window of where I was working.

(I am not a golfer. Uninterested. Although give me a putt-putt course with some weird light up clowns and windmills and I’m in.)

The golfers at the driving range weren’t talking to each other. They didn’t know each other, they weren’t friends but seemed pretty comfortable to all be on the driving range together.

Here’s the other thing…None of them were wearing cowboy hats. Come to think of it, no one was wearing black skinny jeans, moccasins, a three piece suit or a sweatshirt around their waste either.

No. Magically everyone was wearing almost the exact same thing.

They didn’t call each other beforehand to coordinate. They just showed up like that. Everyone just knew what to wear.

Why? How is this possible?

One of my absolute favorite phrases from a lovely guy, Seth Godin: People like us do stuff like this.

‘People like us do stuff like this’ is everywhere. We all participate and we all contribute.

Informative. Interesting. Entertaining.

When you’re a band or artist being asked questions in an interview, your answers will be a combination of the following:

Informative

Interesting

Entertaining

Informative is the easiest ingredient and it is pretty bland unto itself. Interesting means you’re digging and have some intuition. Entertaining is the most elusive and hardest to get good at.

It’s worth getting better. After all, this is the entertainment business.

Timeless and Timely

Painting your daughters bedroom bright pink isn’t timeless…but it sure is timely.

And timely can go a long way.

It doesn’t do a lot of good to reason with your child that pink just doesn’t make sense because in a few years you’re going to have to repaint it something a little more timeless when you sell the house.

Taking care of someone in a timely way can be pretty timeless.

Also…I was reminded this weekend about a post I wrote a while back about not giving up. It’s a pretty good story.

Making It Fun To Show Up

Synth patches and drum loops make it a lot more fun to show up for the writing session.

Coffee and donuts make it fun to show up too.

So does a good view or a well decorated studio.

Or an excited presence.

A warm spirit.

A deep soul.

What do you bring that makes it fun for the others to show up?

Walking On Easy Street...

Doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve succeeded.

Not all happiness comes from things being easy.

More ease doesn’t necessarily lead to more ease.

It’s not going to always be easy. We got things like the moon landing and the climactic moment in Rudy from people acknowledging and seeking out the hard parts. By pushing through when no one knew if the pain would lead to the desired result.

Embrace the pain and difficulty. It’s a sign you’re on the right track.
