Between Structures

You have to have the structures in order to have the spaces between the structures.

The spaces in between the structures are where the improvisation happens, the spontaneity, an absence of premeditation.

It can’t be all spaces in between and it can’t be all structures. It takes both.

Busy And Tired

Everyone I know is busy and tired.

Apparently nothing can stop this.

The assumed solution is that once you’re not busy and tired you’ll figure out how to keep from becoming busy and tired all over again.

But that moment may not be coming.

Better to decide what you want to be busy and tired from.

I Can't Do It

When you say ‘I can’t do it’ and then someone tells you you can and then you end up doing it, that’s really helpful.

It’s helpful because it starts getting you to think that when you say ‘I can’t do it’, you might be wrong.

Over time, ‘I can’t do it’ simply turns into the first step of doing it.

Talking and Trying

First Monday of the month, new Hum Love playlist on Spotify and Apple.

Trying the idea is always different than sitting around talking about it. And trying it usually reframes or resolves the arguments of those rooting for and against.

That’s one of the beauties about the way music is often made today. The tools are right there, so when you have an idea you can try it quickly rather than it taking hours like it use to. No re-mic’ing the drum kit, no calling around to see who has that guitar or synth you think you might want on the track.

Yes, unlimited undo’s is a blessing and a curse. But part of the blessing is you can stop talking and start trying quickly and easily.

»» If you listen to the play list on Spotify and you click the heart at the top it’ll automatically update for you each time I change it.

»» And as always if you have suggestions for songs that might fit on a playlist like this one, send them on over.

Proving Them Wrong

What would it actually take? And who are “them”?

And are those the people you want to spend time, energy and recourses on?

You might prove some people wrong as a byproduct of doing hard work, but don’t work hard to prove people wrong.

Behind Closed Doors

The way you do business. The culture of your team. The joy in your work.

Is it better than what you portray on the internet or worse?

Would your fans be surprised for the better or for the worse if they got to see a true day in the life?

In either case, work to make it better.
