Falling Leaves

I have two giant trees in my small front yard. Which means that while only about fifty percent of the leaves have fallen so far, my yard is covered and it’s only getting more covered.

So the question is…do I bag them up now and then bag up the rest once they’ve fallen in a week…or do I just do them all at the same time next week?

Well this isn’t my first rodeo.

I’ve found that whether there’s a lot of leaves or a LOT of leaves, it takes about the same time to get the lawn cleared in both cases.

So while it might seem like I’m getting ahead of the game by starting now and thereby making less work for myself later…in the grand scheme it’s better to hold off and do them all at the same time.

The metaphor holds true for a lot of the busy work we rush out to do just to make ourselves feel productive.

Man What Are You Doing Here

‘And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar and say man what are you doin here.’

(What am I doing here? Well, part of me was thinking the same thing!)

What they really meant to say when they said that was: I’m glad you’re here.

When you do things in front of people a lot, people say strange things. Weird compliments, backhanded compliments, ‘constructive’ criticism. But the fact that they’re taking time to say anything means you made a difference.

Sitting Behind A Drum Kit

Reading a blog post about the subject is great. Reading a book, watching a documentary, finding a podcast about it. It’s all good and it all matters.

But doing it is a whole different thing.

You can memorize all the drum sets in the catalog and know what sizes Bonham and Ringo and Moon used…

And then you can actually sit behind a drum kit.

The Desired Destination

If you go, I’ll go.

vs.

I’m going, you’re invited.

Too often artists are content to play to the level of their audience rather than taking the lead...leading the audience to a desired destination.

A Word About Fame And Fortune

Fame and fortune.

They don’t always go together these days.

And I don’t think we even have a shared definition of the terms themselves anymore.

How many people have to hear about you until you’re famous?

How much money is a fortune?

The only way you’ll know if you have fame and fortune is if you define what it is far in advance of getting there.

Saying Hello

There’s a million ways to say hello. And ‘hello’ is a great thing to say. But some tones and attitudes can turn it into an unwelcome greeting.

If what you’re saying isn’t working, change how you’re saying it.

No need to go looking for a completely new message.
