A Big Contribution

That’s what we want to make. We want to follow our instincts about a project and have our instincts and skills validated through connection with a large enough group of people.

We want our big contribution to be helpful, to lift others. And for ourselves to have done something difficult, faced a challenge, pushed through, overcame the odds and achieved an outcome that is uniquely ours.

Of course the question is how big is big enough?

The answer won’t magically appear to you. You have to dig into it.

Why Did It Happen Like That

Learn what you can from the previous circumstance and move on to the next.

If it’s helpful to ask the question, ask it.

But don’t let ‘why did it happen like that’ become a distraction.

We can get lulled into constantly digging into the answer to the question rather than doing the work we actually set out to do.

Getting With Decision Makers

There’s a chance the person you’re talking with at the company doesn’t have the power or authority to help you in the way they made it seem like they could.

And instead of admitting it or passing you up the chain, they just stall and try to get rid of you as smoothly as possible.

It’s not about trying harder to turn their No into a Yes. The Yes just isn’t possible with this person despite how nice they are or how well intended.

Learn what you can and move on. Work to get in rooms with the real decision makers.

What Genre?

If you can’t confidently tell me what genre your music is then you’re being too precious about your music.

Because if I ask you about any other artist (including all of your favorite artists), you can tell me their genre…but some how you’re the only one who can’t be defined?

Being willing to put yourself in a box is a great step forward.

Build It On Wheels

If you want to build stuff in your garage it’s a good idea to build a work bench first. You’ll be like Kris Kringle in there. Making all sorts of gadgets and reaching for the upper echelon of diy life.

But when you build that work bench, put wheels on it.

While you’ve just built the thing and all you want to do is to be done and start building other things on top of it…go make one more trip to the hardware store, buy four locking casters and screw them into the legs.

Wheels make it flexible. Wheels let you adjust. The project in six months with the extra long 2x4 will thank you.

It’s one thing to be willing to adjust when the project calls for it…but the ability to adjust allows for it to actually happen.

Build your thing with sufficient adaptability.
