Winning People Over

What do you do when you don’t have to win people over anymore?

This is a tough question for a few reasons.

-Many years are spent having to win people over. So we’re used to the mentality of more, more, more.

-We don’t know how many people we have to win over in order to not have to win people over anymore. And since we don’t have the information and numbers and plan to figure it out, it becomes an emotional, feelings driven response.

-Since there’s always more people to win over, deciding to not actively win them over feels like we fell short, like there was more to attain and we just didn’t have the backbone or that we’re less than.

Christmas Music

This is the time of year we’re all in the mood for it.

It’s this time of year that artists hear other artists Christmas music and think, ‘I’m in the mood to make a Christmas album myself’.

But it’s now it’s too late to get an album tracked and mixed and mastered and released in time for the holiday season.

If you want to release a Christmas album you have to make it when you’re not in the mood to make a Christmas album. i.e. July.

If you wait for the mood in order to do the work you’re probably going to be too late.

Cheeseburger Iterations

When we’re kids we want a cheeseburger. Bun, burger, cheese. That’s it. McDonald’s and all the others are happy to serve that up. Then slowly we mature into being fine with ketchup on there…McDonald’s can handle that too.

And then a few more years pass by. We travel a bit. We read some health blogs. We have a little extra cash.

Our taste develops.

Now we want a cheeseburger but this time it’s with garlic aioli, pickles from a local farmer and a type of cheese that we can’t pronounce.

McDonald’s doesn’t do that but there are other places that do.

As your fans and customers change you have to make the choice if you’re going to change and develop along with them or simply pass them off to the next iteration of what you do.

There’s no one right answer but getting caught in the middle is usually a tough place to be.

Meaningful Checklist

When you’re doing meaningful work…

Dreams, action, risk and discomfort often go together.

So if you’re not doing meaningful work but want to be, this is a pretty good checklist.

Five Dollar Gift Card

A five dollar gift card is great but it isn’t worth much anymore. It’s almost insignificant.

But not quite.

Stack a couple of those five dollar gift cards together and you might be able to do a little something. Add a few more and now you’ve got a pretty good Saturday afternoon.

The steps that seem insignificant might actually be little tiny victories…and little tiny victories over time are one of the best ways to get to where you want to go.

If You Work Hard...

…you will become better.

It doesn’t mean you’ll become great, or get paid, or get famous, or get to quit your day job, or win the comparison challenge, or break new ground, or get the credit, or get noticed, or be respected in the field.

It might. It could. I hope it does. Hard work might turn into all of those things for you.

But if you keep working hard you will get better. The increments might be big or small and the word ‘better’ might evolve in its definition over time…but better is where you’re heading if you’re willing to work.
