Sports Reruns

Watching a rerun of any sports game is really interesting. You already know the outcome…but the players and the people in attendance don’t.

The people who were there didn’t know the outcome are carrying huge tension and anxiety. But you just get to enjoy it because you already know how it ends.

The tension is only worth the trouble as a means of entertainment (the fans)…or if the tension can effect the outcome for the better (the players).

Taking it out of the metaphor and putting into real life…

The trap is when we have the tension but can’t effect the outcome and in no way is it entertaining but we decide to keep it on our shoulders anyway.

A Gift And A Miracle

The opportunity to sit down and write is a gift…when it all comes together just right it’s a miracle…but the miracle only happens as a result of engaging with the gift.

Complex Sugars

First Monday of the month, new Hum Love playlist on Spotify and Apple

A lot of people are going with Christmas music in the lead up to the big holiday.

And the popularity of the genre is always a good reminder that the general listening audience is more than capable and willing to happily digest complex chord structures and acrobatic melodies. Especially when they’re wrapped in a little sugar.

Winning People Over

What do you do when you don’t have to win people over anymore?

This is a tough question for a few reasons.

-Many years are spent having to win people over. So we’re used to the mentality of more, more, more.

-We don’t know how many people we have to win over in order to not have to win people over anymore. And since we don’t have the information and numbers and plan to figure it out, it becomes an emotional, feelings driven response.

-Since there’s always more people to win over, deciding to not actively win them over feels like we fell short, like there was more to attain and we just didn’t have the backbone or that we’re less than.

Christmas Music

This is the time of year we’re all in the mood for it.

It’s this time of year that artists hear other artists Christmas music and think, ‘I’m in the mood to make a Christmas album myself’.

But it’s now it’s too late to get an album tracked and mixed and mastered and released in time for the holiday season.

If you want to release a Christmas album you have to make it when you’re not in the mood to make a Christmas album. i.e. July.

If you wait for the mood in order to do the work you’re probably going to be too late.

Cheeseburger Iterations

When we’re kids we want a cheeseburger. Bun, burger, cheese. That’s it. McDonald’s and all the others are happy to serve that up. Then slowly we mature into being fine with ketchup on there…McDonald’s can handle that too.

And then a few more years pass by. We travel a bit. We read some health blogs. We have a little extra cash.

Our taste develops.

Now we want a cheeseburger but this time it’s with garlic aioli, pickles from a local farmer and a type of cheese that we can’t pronounce.

McDonald’s doesn’t do that but there are other places that do.

As your fans and customers change you have to make the choice if you’re going to change and develop along with them or simply pass them off to the next iteration of what you do.

There’s no one right answer but getting caught in the middle is usually a tough place to be.
