The Proven Plan

They’re not easy to come by but there are certain aspects of life and careers where there’s a proven plan. A step by step guide to get from here to there. It’s still not easy but the road has been travelled many times before, so just stick with it.

And it’s wonderful, but here’s the often overlooked catch…

After you’ve achieved the proven plan, the only next move is to make up a non proven plan. A plan where it’s going to be hard AND it’s impossible to know for sure if it’s going to work. It’s unproven. It’s back to being scary.

It would be fun to be able to jump from proven plan to proven plan. But eventually the plan runs out of proof. And you have to keep moving anyway.

Posture and Lazer Lights

The difference between your show and Taylor Swift’s or Bruno Mars’ isn’t the size of the budget.

It’s easy to think that if you could buy the staging, lights, dancers, band, wardrobe, video content and rehearsal space, you’d have just as great of a show.

But no…

The main difference between their show and yours is that they take on the posture of paying attention to every detail. Of understanding that when the spotlight is on, every nano second is showtime. Every gesture, every note, every word, every step, every eye blink.

That posture is free for the taking. And it’s way more important than the lazer lights.

In Order To Be Exciting...

You have to have times you’re not.

Even the latest action movie has at least a little down time between explosions and car chases.

The way in which we identify something or someone has to do with what sticks out against the back drop…and it’s hard for excitement to stick out if the its against a back drop of excitement.

It’s why the hair metal bands had ballads.

Today's Broadcast

“And this concludes today’s broadcast”

Until the mid/late 90’s tv stations ended the day, usually around eleven or midnight, with this message and then the screen just went to static. Nothing more to see here. The day is done.

It’s not like that anymore.

Now it’s up to us to end the day’s broadcast. The day’s consumption. The day’s output. The day’s striving. The day’s creating.

We’ll have another chance tomorrow.

This concludes today’s broadcast.

SNL Preface

There’s no SNL preface.

No one comes out before the show and says, ‘hey this weeks show isn’t gonna be as good as the last few…and it’s definitely not going to be a classic but here it is anyway’.

But they know.

It feels so good to preface because it insulates us from taking full responsibility and it helps try and control how someone receives whatever comes next.

But if the thing is worth saying in the first place, it probably doesn’t need a preface. And if it needs a preface maybe the thing after it isn’t worth saying.

Be Glad You Did It

Do projects that even if it fails you’ll be glad you did it.

Release music you can by known through.

Work on things that are working.

Play with players who make soundcheck and dinner fun.

Work with people who are good at making concrete plans…and adjusting them.

If you’re in a spotlight, do something with it.
