It’s hard to identify with people and cultures from thousands of years ago.
But when I think about the people making the cave paintings…trying to make it great, trying to tell a story, trying to make something cool, trying to get the lines in proportion, trying to make something to show the people around them, worried that none of this will work out…
…not much has changed for an artist from then till now.
Starting out there’s a lot of drive and not a lot of opportunity.
Then for those who are skilled and lucky and determined enough to climb to the top of the mountain, the other side of it often looks like…a lot of opportunity and not a lot of drive.

We go on the tour, play the shows, have the meetings, do the interviews, launch the project, reply to the emails, do the photoshoots…with a deep yet maybe ignored understanding that we will inevitably be back in our rooms alone to practice our craft and make something new.
Sometimes there’s just too much wisdom floating around.
It’s ok to turn it off. Unsubscribe from the podcast or text thread or blogger and put down the books.
Wisdom works best when it finds us in a state where we are willing to be changed by it.
There are great ideas and knowledge and morning routines to be learned from…but you’re not going to get behind if you shut it down for a while.
