Hardest vs Best

You just got done running a mile and your friend asks ‘did you try your hardest?’

Yes of course. Your legs were burning, your lungs were on fire, and now you’re about to pass out from trying your hardest.

Then there’s the next question, ‘did you do your best?’

That’s a lot more tricky. It gets into your potential, preparation and commitment.

We can try our hardest at the drop of a hat. But doing our best takes a lot longer.

Cycle Of So That

Eventually there needs to be something you do just because you like it.

Because too often (and without noticing it) we get caught in the cycle of ‘so that’...

I’m doing this so that it leads to that.

Heat vs. Fame

Coldplay is very famous but they haven’t had heat in a long time.

Chappell Roan has a lot of heat, she may have fame for a long time. Or maybe not.

Heat is of the moment. Buzz. Top of the pop culture.

Famous (in this case) is more settled. Lots of options. A fixture in the pop culture.

Taking Your Show With You

When the label drops you

When the publisher doesn’t pick up the option

When the agent switches agencies and you get dropped in the shuffle

When the marketing team no longer feels like marketing

You get to take your show with you.

You may have given up some master rights and some publishing rights. You may have lost out on some gigs and spent too much money on marketing and PR…but the show…that thing you do when you get up on stage…

They can’t have that. It’s yours no matter what.

Dark House

The light house casts light for all to see.

But there’s no dark house.

You can’t cast dark…darkness comes from getting in the way of light. Dark needs light in order to be dark.

But light doesn’t need the dark in order to be what it is.

High End Version

There’s a high end version of everything.

It might not be a lot different than the cheaper version but it’s significantly different.

If you want to be the high end version it’s worth taking the time to figure out what little changes need to be made. And there’s a good chance the tweaks you need to make are in the story you sell more than the thing you do.
