Who Needs A Hand?

Who needs a hand?

The people you don’t think need a hand.  The people, who, when you think of them you think “they’re fine, they have it together, they work hard, they’ll be alright”.

But for these hard charging people, if they don’t have hits under their belts, if you can’t name their hits, trust me, they need a hand. They need a favor, a champion, another believer to swing the bat on their behalf.

It’s easy to see a wounded, self loathing, inexperienced artist and want to be their savior and champion.  But the risk is so incredibly high with an artist like that because they haven’t proven they know how to WORK.

The people you think will be alright, aren’t alright. While they’re willing to (and do) work their tails off day in and day out, they could use a bump.

It’s not the rich helping the soon to be rich. It’s not ignore the naive newbies.

It’s do things for people who DO THINGS.

That’s “doing” well spent.

Fire Up The Megaphone

The music business is insanely cluttered, so your message needs to be pin point clear if you wanna rise above.  Razor sharp, in bold type, spoken of often, and always in consideration of.

Let go of the ambiguous artist thing.  Let go of we’ll just see what happens. Let go of we’ll figure it out later.  Let go of I just wanna make music man.

Sharpen your edges and fire up the megaphone (in that order).

Maybe Not This, But That

Maybe you don’t need new ideas, but need to remember the good ones from before.

Maybe you don’t need to be thinking of any ideas right now at all, but need to get out of the house.

Maybe you don’t need a better song, but a better reason for singing a song.

Maybe you don’t need a dream, but a plan.

Maybe you don’t need a plan, but a dream.

Maybe you don’t need to work on proving that group of people wrong, but work on proving this group of people right.

Some things to consider.

You’ve Heard It All Before

Follow The Energy

If an idea, a style, a way of doing things attracts people more naturally, feed that fire.  Stop making it more difficult than it has to be.  You’re allowed to do something that’s making sense rather than doing something that’s incredibly difficult while trying to make sense of it.

Making Others’ Dreams

Tis’ true…if you help make enough other peoples’ dreams come true, yours are bound to be made too.  Usually the only way to find out what someone else’s hopes and dreams are is to ask them.

Your Followers Are Watching

The standards and values you set for yourself are more important than the ones you seek to enforce on your team.  If you’re the leader, the others are watching and learning.

Bigger Or Better

Bigger as in “how can my career get bigger” triggers thoughts of “what outside forces have to happen TO me”.  While “how can my career get better” triggers “what can I do”.

The Go-To Artist

You can’t be the go-to artist for everything, so stop expecting to be and stop hoping to be.  Better to work to be the go-to artist for something.

Artist Adversity And Power

When you board the Artist train, adversity is certain…and most artists know what to do with adversity…push through it.

So if all artists experiences adversity, and to a certain degree push through it…adversity and pushing through it can’t be the (main) measuring stick of what makes a great artist.

If you want to really test an artist to see if they’re great, to see if they have what it takes to shake the world…see what happens when the artist is given some power.

What do you do with the adversity given to you? Push through, or not push through (quit)

What will you do with the power given to you?

Speed Up

If everything is going well and is under control, you’re not going fast enough. Speed up.

The edge is where you belong, it’s not the area to be avoided.

This is why artists who have been around for so long make such mediocre music.  Because when you’re young and everything is a hot mess and the only thing you’ve ever known is living on the edge, and you’re barely hanging on and you’re making great music…you dream of one day when it will be different…when everything, including your brain, can be thrown into autopilot and live the easy life.

So “going well and is under control” feels like victory, an arrival point.

But the point is to never arrive here.

If the wheels are a little shaky, the alignment is pulling, the windshield is cracked, and you’re in the fast lane…don’t slow down.
