Nightcap 15

The older I get the more the song Bitch becomes my song…mainly the first line of the chorus.

I still don’t really understand how Ocean’s 11 did what they did.

I was ordering something from the Home Depot website and got on their live chat and asked for 15% percent off…I got 10% off instead…thats pretty good.

If you see me around and the song She’s So High by Tal Bachman comes on, watch my left hand, I will absolutely be subtlety air guitaring that solo.

I was driving behind a brand new corvette in my definitely-not-a-corvette, and a red light was coming up and we both had to stop at it.

**Sorry for the language on that first one mom and dad.

Don’t Be So Precious

Don’t be so precious.

Just try it.

Test the waters.

It’s not going to ruin you.

For some of the stuff you’ve been considering, trying and failing just doesn’t make that big of a difference…or any difference at all.  But trying and learning something is a definite.  And the idea might even be a wild success.

Release the music. Take a trumpet player on the road.  Wear those boots for the photoshoot.  Write with that person. Change the green room food rider. Let the guitar player do that interview on his own.

In and of itself it just doesn’t matter that much…but it matters A LOT because it’s been on your mind and what’s on your mind matters.

If you’ve been thinking about it for a while…try it.

Don’t be so precious.

Want What You Want/Do What You Do

You want what you want but do what you do.

It’s amazing the size of the chasm that can exist between what we want and what we do.

We have big dreams, maybe even a vision…but do we really truly put ourselves in the position to realize/receive it?

Some people don’t know what they want and don’t know what they’re doing.

Some people think they know what they want and are oblivious to the fact that “thinking they know” as opposed to “actually knowing” creates a deficiency of spirit that will greatly limit any action taken.

Some people know what they want and think that knowing is enough.  Arrogance leading to inaction, yielding the opposite of the desired result.

Some people know what they want and it sinks deep into their brain, which turns into an amazing amount of doing…both consciously and subconsciously.

Some people don’t know what they want and take great action in pursuit of the knowing…which they will turn into even greater action.

*I’m sure there’s more types of “some people”, but these are the types I’ve encountered lately.  Both in the world and in the mirror.

Your Career Status

You probably don’t know the status of your career.

You only know the version of it that YOU have experienced.  And you’ve only ever experienced it through YOUR lens.

Which may not be completely accurate.

(which isn’t necessarily a bad thing)

In fact, it’s definitely not completely accurate.

One of the many reasons is this…

The beauty of music these days is that every artists’ music has the legs of a marathon runner and then some…legs that are running while you’re sleeping, while you’re traveling, while you’re depressed, while you’re picking up your kid from school.

The status of your career isn’t as bad as you think it is and isn’t as good as you think it is.

The status of your career is worse than you think it is and better than you think it is.

Wow, that was confusing, even as I typed it.  And now I’ve sat here for five minutes deciding if I should change it or delete it.  I’m leaving it.

Retrospection may give the gift of accuracy one day for all of us, but until then remember…

…most people don’t own a Beatles record.

…someone is probably listening to your music right now.

Holding You Back

Your biggest weakness probably isn’t holding you back.

Your biggest weakness(es) is the easiest to uncover…after all, it’s the biggest.

Since it’s so obvious you probably know what it is, side step it, and build your career on something completely different and far away from it.

Chances are you’ve done this without even really thinking about it.

The things holding you back are much more sneaky, subtle and silent.

*And also, if you can point to a person or object as the thing that’s holding you back, you’re off track.

The Ideal Candidate

In order to be an ideal candidate you have to be a non ideal, or even a horrible candidate in many other places.

Metallica doesn’t get asked to open up the Dolly Parton tour.

Dave Mathews Band doesn’t get asked to play at the Electric Forest EDM Festival.

Adele doesn’t get played when the sports team wins the championship.

Metallica, Dave Mathews and Adele are all just fine with not being a part of those things.  Their blatantly obvious non-idealness for these situations points to the fact that they are the perfect candidate for many of the things that they do in fact get asked to be a part of.

It’s easy to say “I want it all”.

But it’s wiser to understand “If I want some I’m going to have to give up having it all”.
