If You Owned A Mexican Restaurant

There’s a really good way to accurately describe a Mexican restaurant to someone…

“It’s a Mexican restaurant”

That’s it. That’s all you need to say.  To try and add much more to that is just confusing the point.

Now if I owned my own Mexican restaurant I’m pretty sure I would feel the need to elaborate.  Because it’s mine.  I want you to know the details of what makes it different, what makes it special, and all the attention to detail I put into it that sets it apart from all other Mexican restaurants.

So I don’t think of my restaurant as a ‘Mexican restaurant’…I think about it with all of the undertones and storylines and foundation and things that set it apart.

There’s nothing wrong (and everything right) with putting that kind of care into the restaurant, but people looking for a Mexican restaurant are really just looking to know that it is in fact a Mexican restaurant.

I want to elaborate and be precious about my restaurant. I want to EXPLAIN.

Everyone else just walks in and simply knows ‘this is a Mexican restaurant’.

Artists are like that with their music.

Example: It’s a cross between this and that with a little bit of a classic element too, but definitely more dancy, but not like Euro-dance, and we love organic sounds and lots of harmonies…I dunno it’s just kinda it’s own thing.

Please.

Artists can tell you in three words or less exactly what type of music their fellow artists friends play…but when asked about themselves all of a sudden THEIR music can’t be put in a box…there aren’t enough words or explanations or examples to verbalize what kind of music they play. IT’S JUST SO UNIQUE AND SPECIAL.

I don’t need to write you a long paragraph describing to you what kind of food and experience you’re going to have at El Mariachi just down the street from where I live.  You’ve never even been there and you know.  No need to complicate things. It’s a Mexican place.

There’s a really good way to describe what kind of music you make to someone who asks…

What kind of music do you make?

If you’re answer is any longer than three words not only are you being long winded with it, but you’re being too precious about something that’s very simple to the rest of us.

p.s. While the opportunity will not always be there, the best way to answer the question is, “I can tell you, but why don’t I show you instead”.

Will You Charge Me More?

No one will ask you that but some people need it.

I don’t want your amazing filet mignon for $4. I need you to charge me $40, then I will think it’s amazing.

A free counseling session does me no good. I need you to charge me $200…It’s the only way I’m going to learn anything.

This $20 guitar doesn’t sound good…but charge me $2000 and all of a sudden ‘there’s just something about the sound it’.

I don’t want to come to your show for $1…I want to come to your show for $20. I’ll like it more. (and you’ll take the role of entertainer more seriously)

How could you be helpful to your audience by charging more?

Mean Lawyers

You need one.

You need a lawyer that even you are a little bit afraid of.

A lawyer who isn’t looking for friends when negotiating…a bulldog who is getting the best deal for you where YOU still get to be friends with the other entity afterward.

If You Don’t Have Your Vision

Knowing and understanding your vision, as an artist, is important.  Maybe the most important when it comes to having a career as an artist.

But having your answer to “What’s the vision?” can be a long process of opening your eyes.

So if you can’t answer that question right now how about:

What do you need right now?

If you know what you need right now, that’s the instant fuel for spurring meaningful action for yourself and the people around you and on your team.

Being able to consistently answer ‘what do you need right now’ is a great way over time to get closer to the answer of ‘what’s your vision’.

Cancelled Shows

If your show tomorrow night got cancelled, what would you do instead to be effective?  Who would you reach?  How would you make the most of it?

Is the thing you would do instead of the show something that is actually more beneficial than the show…even if the show hadn’t been cancelled?

Maybe you should cancel the show.  Well, maybe you should keep your end of the deal because at this point you’re committed and the show is tomorrow and you don’t want to be a jerk.

Better said…maybe don’t book that show next time.

You need to gauge the value of putting on your show.

(The value of your show is hopefully always very high…but the value of putting on the show is something completely different)

Also worth noting…artists view shows as a big deal, so to cancel (or not book it) and replace it with something else, that ‘something else’ would also need to be a big deal, big value.

So whatever comes to mind that would or could sub in as a show-replacement…do more of that too.

Post Show Vacuum

If everything goes right during the show, you will leave the audience in a huge lull when you get off stage.

A subtle (or not so subtle) yearning and wishing that you could have stayed forever.

A true gift to your audience.

The higher the high is at the end of your show right before you leave the stage, the bigger the deficiency when you exit and leave the audience.  And that pendulum swing is a powerful moment.
