Perhaps the best thing about being the center of attention (and we need people to be the center of attention) is that you have what you need to be the center for connection.
Perhaps the biggest trap about being the center of attention (and we need people to be the center of attention) is that you have what you need to keep it all for yourself.
$100 is a price to plan in advance to go see a band.
If you’ve played two hundred shows and you’re still charging $5, it’s time for a choice
-you ought to quadruple your price
-quit (but before you quit you might as well try quadrupling the price)
-or ask why after two hundred times of getting on stage you don’t have a show that anyone wants to pay more than a price of a latte for. And make the changes quickly.
You need to move from $5 to $20 as soon as possible. If you think you might be ready you’re over due.
Sure you might have more people in the room at $5, but think about what type of people the $20 people are…even if there are fewer of them.
It’s more fun to play for people who want to see you than check you out.
***And so the story goes…If you’ve played a bunch of shows at $20 and people seem to enjoy paying $20, it’s time to give people an opportunity to spend $100 on a special experience.
If $100 is your normal ticket, what’s the $1000 package?
I love Super Bowl Halftime shows because it’s easy to envision all the planning, meetings, egos, insecurities, great ideas, watered down great ideas and safe ideas that go into it. The actual performance is a product of just so many people speaking into it…it’s amazing it happens at all…and on time.
It’s interesting to point out, Maroon 5 got to perform because they have a lot of hits. But to have those hits they had to veer away (starting about ten years ago) from the things that made them a unique, important band.
It was hard to make it seem like they were a band that many cared deeply about.
So when they performed they performed with lots of hits, but minimal importance. That shift, that was Maroon 5’s price to get on the Super Bowl. That was the price they wanted and decided to pay. (Not every act has the same price)
What is Maroon 5 for? It seems they have a pretty clear answer even if it’s not the one I like anymore.
As you’ll see in the video he shoots out of the stage at 1:09 and just stands there. And keeps just standing there. At one point he moves his head from right to left, still no sunglasses touch. Holding the pose. Finally after many ebbs and flows of the cheering crowd he reaches up for his sunglasses at 2:40.
A full minute and a half of just standing there. An eternity for television. No committee approval for that one. In fact it would come out later that there was a lot of committee disapproval happening during that minute and a half.
It’s likely that whatever drives you to drink also drives you to data…ie. Instagram likes, Youtube views, Facebook comments, Spotify streams, website visitors, email subscribers, views, views, views.
