Musicians Are A Resilient Group

Musicians are used to being unemployed. Every time they walk off stage they’re once again unemployed. Until the next gig. Until the next time they get back on stage.

Musicians are a resilient group.

Musicians know the truth about job security.

Musicians are the last to get paid in the music business but first on the call list when magic is needed.

Musicians don’t like the smell of nasty smokey bars either. But they kind of do.

Musicians are smart and capable enough to do other things but would rather not.

Musicians always wind up playing music.

Musicians can find a little comfort just about everywhere, but have a tough time being completely comfortable just about anywhere.

Musicians are the gasoline of the stage.

Musicians make the complex sound simple, the simple sound beautiful.

Room For Hits

Where’s the hit song? What does a hit sound like right now? Does it highlight the uncertainty, does it juxtapose the uncertainty, does it tell a personal story, which words are too predictable, does it have to be a ballad?

The vacuum has been served up on a silver platter, ready to be filled.

Sooner or later a song will fill it.

***As songwriters you can’t write a hit, you can merely write a great song. A hit song is a hit because a million other factors lined up perfectly to make it a hit. But yes, you can write a great song that inspires and invites the luck to draw closer.

Fame And Fortune

If everything goes according to your plans, you’re going to be left with the thing you’re ultimately pursuing.

What is at the heart of what you pursue? Not what do you wish or hope or act like is at the heart of what you pursue, but what IS at the heart of it?

When you make it to the top and all you’re left with is fame and fortune…it’s probably because that was the heart of your pursuit.

Maybe it’s important to make sure you’re pursuing more than that now. That way when everything goes according to your plans, fame and fortune isn’t all you’re left with.

A Little Familiarity

On Friday I sent out a post encouraging you to do a little something extra with the unexpected extra time a lot of us have right now.

That was suppose to be for you. But some of you turned it around on me. You naughty naughty people. But yeah, ok, I get it, you’re right. I’ll play. I hope you do too.

So here goes, starting with the script from Friday…

With everything in life except Christmas being cancelled I have some unexpected extra time on my hands right now…so with that extra time I made this for you…

A bass player singing an Oasis song on guitar, wearing a Bruno Mars hat.

A little familiarity might go a long way right now.

Pain vs. Complain

When you’re willing to be hurt and be in pain it leads to a willingness to need which leads to vulnerability, and from a vulnerable place you can change at the root.

But if you’re simply complaining you don’t want to be helped. Complaining dodges the heart of the pain. Complaining wants the attention of the circumstance with none of the responsibility of what is underneath. Complaining gets the badge of seriousness without having to admit need.

If you need to complain, sure, take five minutes and get it out.

If you’re hurt and in pain, let’s all be willing to dig in.

Unexpected Extra Time

I’ve been passing this idea around to some artists today and decided it would be better to invite everyone, since it would be more fun that way.

You’re welcome to use it and steal it and give it to anyone you’d like…

Here’s the start of your video or post, you decide what ‘this’ is:

Hey everyone, with everything in life except Christmas being cancelled I have some unexpected extra time on my hands right now…so with that extra time I made this for you…
