Holding On To (Some Of) The Hard Part

As the story goes, the more success you achieve the more money comes in.

The more money comes in the more you can delegate the hard parts to others.

The cycle continues until you’ve delegated all the hard parts…because wasn’t that the goal all along?

Now you’re left with the easy parts. Victory.

Only you now realize that without something to push against (a hard part) the easy parts aren’t as fun, don’t have the same zest, aren’t as meaningful. You realize the hard parts were essential. The hard parts created tension and strain and pain that gave way to joy and release.

I hope you make enough money to hire people to do a bunch of the stuff that you don’t like doing or aren’t very good at.

But be sure to hold on to some of the hard part for yourself.

Mediocre To Magic

New Hum Love playlist up on Spotify and Apple

This whole business is built around: when the music is played in that way and that singer hits those notes, something extra special happens.

If the extra special thing never happened there wouldn’t be a business.

And it doesn’t happen all the time. If it did it wouldn’t be extra special.

The difficult commitment as an artist is to accept the moments of mediocrity as a part of the journey to the magic.

If You Have The Answers

If you’re going to go through the trouble to have the answers it’s probably worth it to make sure you’re connected with people who want to ask the questions and are looking forward to what you have to say.

The Beatles' Keyboard Player...

…they didn’t have one.

They could have had any keys player in the world. The best in the world. And it probably would have helped in a lot of ways.

But they didn’t add a keys player.

It was more special to not add a keys player than to add one.

The rare synergy that sometimes happens within a small group of people is invaluable, worth protecting and taking care of.

That Number Right Below The Picture...

There are entire teams, groups in boardrooms, specialists sought out, meeting after meeting, all dedicated to making that number go up.

That’s not your situation yet?

Ok try this…

There are hours of frantic consideration, anxious energy, endless self evaluation and edit after edit, all dedicated to making that number go up.

But why is having a bigger number important? What are you going to do with it? What is it a measurement of?

If you’re going to play the game of always needing that number go up (eventually to infinity), good luck.

Feeling Like An Insider

I’ve never heard anyone say, “I’ve always felt like an insider” (but have of course heard the opposite countless times)

It doesn’t mean there isn’t an inside. After all, an outside can only exist if there’s an inside. And it doesn’t mean you’ve never been an insider.

But often times when you are an insider you instantly don’t feel like you’ve earned your spot. And that feeling of unworthiness makes you feel like an outsider.

So insiders feel like outsiders.

And outsiders feel like outsiders.

Simply…We all want to experience connection with the people and world around us. It’s not a matter of feeling like an insider or outsider, it’s a matter of becoming known.
