The passive boss is cool with you leaving early, extending deadlines, maintaining rather than excellence and enjoys giving the ‘freedom’ that comes from very little accountability. Easy to work with.

The clear boss knows how to get everyone on the same page and pointed in the same direction, expects excellence because that’s what we all agreed to, respects you enough to maintain solid accountability, understands that whether we succeed or fail we’ll do it together and is willing to have difficult conversations even when it’s…difficult.

It used to be that artists would release albums in October and November so they could be bought as gifts. Cashing in on the frenzy. But now there’s not much music gift buying.

Because we stream.

By now more than half of any streaming top chart is bustling with Christmas music. And it’ll keep growing from now until the 25th. It’s a pretty reliable trend at this point…in December most people listen to Christmas music.

So the playlist this month is for the true outliers…the ones who are interested in non Christmas music at Christmas time. There’s not as many of you but your power is mighty.

People have incentive to like the show they’re at. Because people want to believe they do worthwhile things with their time.

So for the people in the room, even if it doesn’t feel like they’re all on your side, deep down they’re on your side.

Command Over Your Direction

You work really hard to make your phone ring.

So when it finally does it’s easy to shift your plans to be based around the incoming calls.

And it’s fun. It’s fun to be wanted. To be in demand.

But after a while you might realize that long seasons of your career have been dictated by whoever is calling rather than the type of contribution that is in your heart to make.

Don’t give the phone callers exclusive command over your direction.

Be Better is just too much to wake up with everyday. It’s the kind of mantra that when you wake up at eighty years old you’ll believe you haven’t done anything with your life because you haven’t done everything.

While it’s true we can all be better…the idea only truly becomes helpful when we wrap it with specifics.

If you stand perfectly still at the mic and sing the first five songs and then at the beginning of the sixth you take one step to the right…everyone will notice. Something is happening. Why now? What’s next? They might even cheer for that step.

The power of a single step. One step changes the context, changes the mood, changes expectations, changes proximity.

You’re probably going to take more than one step when you get on stage…but if one step is all that is required to make a difference, be sure you’re making a difference if you’re taking more steps.
