License Plate Frames

The problem with license plate frames is that when the frame was designed, it wasn’t made with your car in mind.

It’s a cool frame…flames or jewels or neon green or some wacky font and messaging…but how well does it actually work with your car, your color, the actual license plate colors?

The designer has to be content with simply coming up with the frame while never getting to take into consideration where it might be on display. No control over context.

When you make your thing how much control do you have over the context for which it’s experienced?

Energy Call

You had a really taxing day at work so you’re driving home to eat dinner and relax.

And then you get a call.

Your good friend needs your help picking up a washer dryer combo that he bought off of craigslist. So you go. Upon completing the task you hang for a while at catch up with your pal while he serves up some comfort food for a job well done.

There’s something about being called upon that gives us the necessary energy to come through.

We don’t have the energy. Then we get the call. Then we have the energy.

A Boss That Is...

Easy to work with.

This gets said for two main reasons.

The boss is passive.

The boss is clear.

The passive boss is cool with you leaving early, extending deadlines, maintaining rather than excellence and enjoys giving the ‘freedom’ that comes from very little accountability. Easy to work with.

The clear boss knows how to get everyone on the same page and pointed in the same direction, expects excellence because that’s what we all agreed to, respects you enough to maintain solid accountability, understands that whether we succeed or fail we’ll do it together and is willing to have difficult conversations even when it’s…difficult.

First Monday of the month, new Hum Love playlist on Spotify and Apple

It used to be that artists would release albums in October and November so they could be bought as gifts. Cashing in on the frenzy. But now there’s not much music gift buying.

Because we stream.

By now more than half of any streaming top chart is bustling with Christmas music. And it’ll keep growing from now until the 25th. It’s a pretty reliable trend at this point…in December most people listen to Christmas music.

So the playlist this month is for the true outliers…the ones who are interested in non Christmas music at Christmas time. There’s not as many of you but your power is mighty.

Audience Incentive

People have incentive to like the show they’re at. Because people want to believe they do worthwhile things with their time.

So for the people in the room, even if it doesn’t feel like they’re all on your side, deep down they’re on your side.

Command Over Your Direction

You work really hard to make your phone ring.

So when it finally does it’s easy to shift your plans to be based around the incoming calls.

And it’s fun. It’s fun to be wanted. To be in demand.

But after a while you might realize that long seasons of your career have been dictated by whoever is calling rather than the type of contribution that is in your heart to make.

Don’t give the phone callers exclusive command over your direction.
