The Gift Of The Last Step

The last step on to the stage.

That last step does something, gives you something, uncovers something unlike any other step.

The last step from the dark into the spotlight, admitting you want to be up there, that you have the nerve to put on a show. It’s a mind warp.

What a gift. And the last step isn’t look for a thank-you, it just wants you to go out there and deliver.

»» The Coldplay documentary is still streaming on Amazon Prime and right towards the beginning see if you catch what Chris Martin does on the last step getting on stage.

Distracted By Caring About

The list of things we can care about is long.

The list of things we can care for is short.

The things you care for, put your very best into it. And don’t let the things you merely care about distract you from making a difference for the things you care for.

Enjoy The Day

When you sit down to write, to be creative and you get something good, something you like…just enjoy it for the day. No need to rush to show everyone right away. Because if you show someone and they shrug their shoulders, now your day is ruined.

And you should simply enjoy the good feeling for a day. You’ve earned it.

Wait until the next day to pass it around and see if it holds up.

This and a lot more from Jerry Seinfeld on The Tim Ferris Show.

Synchronized Swimming

It’s hard to be a stand out synchronized swimmer.

Standing out isn’t the point of synchronized swimming.

The point is to be exactly like everyone else. That’s how you win.

But for everyone else, it’s not about being exactly like everyone on the team but rather sharing the same vision and using your differences, individual strengths and sharp edges to keep moving together.

Holding On To (Some Of) The Hard Part

As the story goes, the more success you achieve the more money comes in.

The more money comes in the more you can delegate the hard parts to others.

The cycle continues until you’ve delegated all the hard parts…because wasn’t that the goal all along?

Now you’re left with the easy parts. Victory.

Only you now realize that without something to push against (a hard part) the easy parts aren’t as fun, don’t have the same zest, aren’t as meaningful. You realize the hard parts were essential. The hard parts created tension and strain and pain that gave way to joy and release.

I hope you make enough money to hire people to do a bunch of the stuff that you don’t like doing or aren’t very good at.

But be sure to hold on to some of the hard part for yourself.

Mediocre To Magic

New Hum Love playlist up on Spotify and Apple

This whole business is built around: when the music is played in that way and that singer hits those notes, something extra special happens.

If the extra special thing never happened there wouldn’t be a business.

And it doesn’t happen all the time. If it did it wouldn’t be extra special.

The difficult commitment as an artist is to accept the moments of mediocrity as a part of the journey to the magic.
